Description¶
The graduation coaching logic model is a case-management-based intervention adapted from health care and social services, in which a coach "developing/monitoring/modifying an educational development plan" meets weekly with at-risk students, arranges tutoring, liaises between school and home, and monitors academic progress at least weekly. Grounded in constructivist and socio-cultural theory, coaches help students "co-construct viewpoints from which they can understand how their personal world and their educational world intersect." The model was implemented in a rural high school with data-driven classification dashboards, real-time gradebook access, and an Activity Reporting System supporting formative and summative evaluation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A dedicated graduation coach (half-time in this study) with access to electronic gradebook and confidential student records
- Cooperation from students and parental involvement and support
- Referral programs and support services for individual students
Constraints¶
- Coaching is a resource and staff intensive process
- Coaching may not be the right support service for all students; students not responding within a reasonable period may be removed from the caseload
- Graduation coaching may not be enough to help students overcome academic problems because of the complexity of personal and behavioral problems
Target Learners¶
- at-risk 9th-grade high school students in rural settings
Learning Goals¶
- improve core-course academic performance
- promote student retention and progression to graduation
Claims¶
- Graduation Coaching Raises Core Gpa Rural [+M]
- Longitudinal Classification Validity [+M]
