Description

Students set up two field research sites (grassy field and paved area) of ideally 30 by 30 m, matching the MODIS satellite swath size. They collected surface temperature data using infrared thermometers, surface conditions, and atmospheric conditions including cloud cover and aerosols. Data were collected ideally within an hour before or after solar noon, converted to Universal Greenwich Time, and entered on the GLOBE Web site. The article states "The students provided ground truthing of data the satellite was collecting." Data were collected for 10 consecutive school days between Thanksgiving and Christmas/winter break 2007.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • GPS coordinates taken so data could be geolocated
  • infrared thermometer for remote sensing
  • GPS unit
  • GIS software

Constraints

  • If the ideal area was not available, the students could still collect the information from smaller sites
  • If the data were not collected at that ideal time, it was still valuable, and all data collected were time stamped

Target Learners

  • grades 7-12 students

Learning Goals

  • geospatial technology skills
  • field research methods
  • global climate change concepts
