Description

An instructional component in which the experimental group received "explicit instruction in a guided human–AI collaboration workflow built around five interrelated components": problem framing and prompt design; generating alternative outlines, arguments, and claims; iterative drafting and revision; verification and triangulation of claims and citations; and responsible-use regulation. Students used a generative AI assistant for idea development and structural scaffolding alongside a language-feedback tool, and each major assignment included an AI-use log documenting prompts, outputs consulted, and accept/reject decisions with justifications.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Access to a generative AI assistant and a language-feedback tool
  • Explicit instruction in the five workflow components
  • An AI-use log per major assignment documenting prompts, outputs, and accept/reject/justify decisions

Constraints

  • The instructional model is contingent on scaffolding quality, metacognitive readiness, and institutional governance
  • Without structured workflows and accountability mechanisms, risks of over-reliance and superficial learning are substantially elevated

Target Learners

  • Saudi undergraduate EFL students in a required academic writing course

Learning Goals

  • Academic writing proficiency
  • Digital critical thinking and AI literacy
  • Responsible and ethical AI use
