Holistic, place-based, time-bound Indigenous teaching pattern¶

Description¶
In the Elders' teaching of Indigenous knowledge in this study, all forms of knowledge were taught holistically rather than divided into disciplines, avoiding what Nadasdy called compartmentalization of IK. For example, "the Elders employed religion and spirituality to explain environmental studies topics," which the ECCD curriculum's subject divisions precluded for the teacher. Teaching was also not based on a single activity: Elders identified plants and farms incidentally while walking, and some teaching was time-bound to particular seasons and times of day, such as morning collection of fuelwood and termites.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A guiding framework such as two-eyed seeing to integrate IK into individual topics
- Attention to the types of IKs that can be taught given times and seasons
Constraints¶
- Some Indigenous knowledge is time-bound: activities such as collecting fuelwood, shea nuts and harvesting termites are normally done in the morning, and seasonal crops could not be taught in the dry season
Target Learners¶
- Kindergarten 2 pupils (ages 6-8) in a rural Kasena community
Target Goals¶
- Environmental studies concepts understood through holistic, locally grounded Indigenous knowledge
