Description

The Instructional Conversation pedagogy centers on educational discussion in which "the teacher adjusts their side of a conversation toward what they believe a student is trying to say about a topic," with teacher and student working together through conversation to form an authentic idea or conclusion. Combined with Joint Productive Activities (JPAs), students complete a content-related task through collaboration and conversation, creating a tangible product such as a t-chart. What distinguishes IC-JPAs from other classroom collaboration is the emphasis on students creating their own conversational goals, leading the conversations, and working together toward the product. The framework aims to build learning through educational conversations and relationships rather than pencil-and-paper work, and to bridge social-emotional learning and academic content in one cohesive activity.
