Instructional design model for product development structured as 11 measurable modules across four design phases

Description

The article proposes a prescriptive instructional design model for the Product Development Process, built on the design phases of Pahl et al. and split so each phase can be measured with NASA-TLX. The authors state: "We divide the design method into 11 modules to represent all the phases of product creation", with each module containing a minimum of three measurable activities. The four phases are clarification of the task, conceptual design, design embodiment, and detailed design and final product, spanning activities from data collection and sketching through CAD modelling to prototype manufacture and validation.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Design phases must be split into modules with specific, measurable tasks so NASA-TLX can be applied to each activity

Constraints

  • The initial design methods need modification to have clear tasks measurable in practice; instructional design methods must have specific outcomes to be measurable and predictable

Target Learners

  • young designers (design students/novice practitioners)

Learning Goals

  • understanding and executing the product development design process phases
