Description¶
The authors propose an instructional design model for instant messenger application learning in medical education, intended to fill the theoretical vacuum they identified in the reviewed studies. It is "drawing from Dabbagh and Bannan-Ritland's exploration-enactment-evaluation learning design framework for online education [50], in turn informed by socio-cultural and constructivist theories (Fig. 2)". The model combines the three usage strategies and is offered as a resource for educators planning IMA use, standing distinct from generic technology-enhanced learning models.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Educators planning IMA use should apply the model to give learning activities a theory-driven instructional design foundation.
Constraints¶
- The review states further research is warranted to explore the utility of the design model; it had not itself been empirically evaluated.
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate medical students
- postgraduate medical trainees
Learning Goals¶
- theory-driven instructional design of instant messenger learning activities
