Description

The central theory this meta-data-analysis of 25 published articles developed through constructivist grounded theory proposes that students' learning experiences will be enhanced through the implementation of an inductive approach to qualitative research education that incorporates experiential learning early in the learning experience. The theoretical code chosen was experiential learning/active learning. The authors recommend reversing the typical course structure of philosophy, epistemology, followed by skills, or at least reconsidering it.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Instructors must incorporate experiential learning early in the learning experience, before philosophical and theoretical instruction, for the theory's predicted enhancement of learning experiences and outcomes.

Constraints

  • The theory was built from 25 published articles reporting students' perspectives only; the authors state the results are not suitable for statistical generalizability and support only analytical generalizability.

Target Learners

  • graduate students learning qualitative research

Learning Goals

  • conducting qualitative research
  • understanding qualitative research methodology
