Inferential word-learning task with retrospective confidence ratings and hierarchical Bayesian meta-d' estimation

Description

A cross-modal experimental instrument in which participants learn 20 pseudoword–referent pairings through disambiguation of semantically ambiguous scenes (e.g. selecting a table with a "dax"), then select referents while rating confidence on a 4-point scale. Metacognition is quantified as meta-d' via "the signal detection theory framework", estimated with Fleming's hierarchical Bayesian HMeta-d code; metacognitive efficiency is the ratio of meta-d' to d'. The article used it to compare word-learning accuracy and metacognitive monitoring across Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese speakers in visual and auditory modalities.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Pseudowords tailored to each language's phonotactics (UniPseudo for Portuguese and Saudi Arabic; MELD-SCH non-existent characters for Chinese) and counterbalancing of modality order and referents across participants and genders

Constraints

  • The study was not preregistered; metacognition is measured only via retrospective confidence ratings, which the authors admit cannot separate confidence judgments guided with versus without conscious awareness

Target Learners

  • University students aged 18-30, native speakers of Arabic, Mandarin Chinese or Portuguese, with intermediate formal English knowledge

Learning Goals

  • Inferential word learning from contextual cues and metacognitive monitoring of vocabulary learning success
