Integrated robotics course framework organizing a complete research workflow around one shared robot artifact¶
Design · All designs

Description¶
The framework organizes mechanical assembly, electrical setup, simulation, policy learning, system identification, and physical deployment around a shared robotic artifact. It combines "parallel disciplinary tracks, sequencing based on technical dependencies, progressive integration of simulation and hardware, layered performance checkpoints, and structures for balancing collaborative work with individual accountability." It was developed iteratively and refined through a five-expert formative review.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A shared robotic artifact connecting disciplinary work to observable behavior
- Staged tasks and bounded customization adapted for high-school learners
Constraints¶
- The article states the framework "does not establish that a humanoid course teaches introductory RL more effectively than simpler alternatives"
- Effectiveness remains untested
Target Learners¶
- High-school students in grades 9-12
Learning Goals¶
- Understanding how systems acquire behavior through reinforcement learning
- Integrated STEM reasoning across mechanical, electrical, and computational work
Claims¶
Related Designs¶
- Five design principles: one artifact, dependency sequencing, progressive sim-hardware integration, scaffolded bounded choice, and paired collaboration with individual evidence
- Four coordinated disciplinary tracks (ME, Build, EE, CS+AI) with dependency-gated progression
- Three design tensions from expert feedback: authenticity versus cognitive load, integration versus visible progress, and team construction versus individual accountability
