Description¶
Integrative language teaching techniques are an approach in which the four language skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing — are presented and assessed in an interrelated way rather than in isolation. The article defines it, citing Routman, as "an approach to learning or way of thinking that takes into account the interrelationship between the elements in the process of language including reading, writing, speaking". In the study, a speaking lesson was designed so that listening, reading and writing activities supported the speaking task, on the premise that material presented in one skill proceeds into the others.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Instruction must deliberately connect the four skills so that material presented in one skill proceeds into the others, as the article's implementation steps show.
Constraints¶
- The article's empirical support comes from one single-group quasi-experiment in a German language program, without a comparison group.
Target Learners¶
- University students in a German language education program
Learning Goals¶
- German speaking skills, supported by integrated listening, reading and writing
