Description

The pedagogical intervention model of iTalk2Learn specifies an exploratory-first sequencing in which "students begin their session in the ELE, where they engage with an exploratory task." While students work, the Student Needs Assessment component judges whether the student is under-, over-, or appropriately challenged; an appropriately challenged student is switched to the ITS for a structured practice task mapped to the fine-grain goal of the completed ELE task. Students complete a fixed ITS sequence (up to five tasks) before returning to the ELE. The model aligns with problem-solving-before-instruction approaches the authors cite (Sinha & Kapur, 2021).

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A Student Needs Assessment component with expert-rated task difficulty and rules to decide when to switch between ELE and ITS tasks

Constraints

  • The first ITS task is mapped as closely as possible to the fine-grain goal of the completed ELE task; students return to the ELE after five structured tasks or when under-challenged

Target Learners

  • Primary and secondary students learning equivalent fractions

Learning Goals

  • Joint development of conceptual and procedural fractions knowledge
