Description¶
The article's Jigsaw implementation organises a 15-week laboratory course into five-person heterogeneous Jigsaw groups formed by academic achievement, and topic-based expert groups of the same size. Each member studies one sub-topic, performs its related experiments, and teaches it back in the home group before all groups run experiments by turns. The article reports that "five Jigsaw groups with five people w ere formed" and "five Expert Groups consisting of f ive members were set up", with 2 hours for first Jigsaw activities, 4 for expert groups, 4 for second Jigsaw activities and 10 for experiments per field.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The main content chosen for group work must be divided into sub-categories for the equal responsibility of group members
- Cooperative tasks must be challenging enough to require joint effort and include sufficient tasks for each member to contribute
Constraints¶
- When students believe their individual efforts are not related to group performance, social evasion and fool effect may occur
- Some student teachers' not doing their job properly affected other student teachers' learning badly
Target Learners¶
- third-grade prospective science teachers in tertiary education
Learning Goals¶
- scientific process skills
- physics, chemistry and biology laboratory content
- cooperative social skills
Claims¶
