Description

The article adopts Jonassen's (1997) "Instructional Design Model for Well-Structured Problems" as the design theory for the experimental treatment. It prescribes a seven-step sequence: "Step-1: Presenting the problem", reviewing concepts, rules and principles, presenting conceptual models of the CP domain, presenting worked examples, presenting practice problems, supporting the search for different solutions, and reflecting on problem states and solutions. In the study the first four steps ran in lectures and the next three in lab hours, modeling CP as a well-structured PS process.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Well-defined programming problems with preferred or prescribed solutions, since well-structured problems "require application of finite number of rules, principles and concepts"
  • Instructor training in conducting PS-based course activities

Constraints

  • The study applied the model only to well-structured problems; "the problems used in this study did not include ill-structured problems"

Target Learners

  • first-year undergraduate novice programmers

Learning Goals

  • problem-solving skills
  • C programming knowledge and skills
