Description¶
The Jordan Chatbot is a human-centred, pedagogical support agent built on the GPT-4o large language model and deployed as a unit-specific conversational agent within the LMS. The article states it "integrates three core components: (1) system instructions defining the chatbot's identity, personality, inclusions, and exclusions; (2) a curated knowledge base containing disciplinary and institutional materials; and (3) an embedded interface within the LMS". Its design draws on situated learning theory and Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, positioning the chatbot as a mediating tool that extends but does not replace teacher guidance, and supports self-regulated learning through immediate personalised feedback.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A curated knowledge base of unit learning materials and institutional resources to ground responses and reduce inaccurate outputs
- System prompts defining the pedagogical role, behavioural boundaries and response limitations, including restrictions on answering assessment-related questions
- Deployment within the LMS by developers rather than academic staff to ensure consistency and standards
Constraints¶
- Configured not to answer assessment-related questions
- Selected over general-purpose chatbots to comply with institutional privacy and governance requirements
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate business and law students at a regional Australian university
Learning Goals¶
- Navigating unit content, assessment requirements and institutional resources
- Clarifying difficult disciplinary concepts and supporting self-directed study
