Description

The article describes journal writing as "a learning continuum in which students have several opportunities to learn throughout the continuum chain." The cycle starts with selecting a journal scenario or topic with instructions and criteria; students research the topic, review relevant vocabulary, grammar or culture, reflect, and express an opinion in writing; teachers give feedback via correction codes; students find and correct their own errors, verify the corrections, and often share what they learned with fellow students. Assignments progressed from lower-order thinking tasks early in the course to higher-order thinking and problem-solving tasks in semester three.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Assignments need their own instructions and objectives, with criteria and measurable objectives set for journal writing
  • Students set a time limit for journal writing (40-60 minutes)
  • Journals are collected daily and feedback is given in the form of correction codes

Constraints

  • The pattern was implemented within a fifty-week intensive government language course and the authors note the study is based on generalized knowledge that may or may not work for other similar classes

Target Learners

  • adult foreign-language learners in an intensive MSA course, aged 29-35, with university education

Learning Goals

  • listening and reading comprehension in Modern Standard Arabic
  • reflective and critical thinking in the target language
