Description

The article organizes its growth charts by dividing the measurement span into numbered developmental periods: a pre-grasping period to the fourth month, development of grasping from the fourth to sixth month, movements preliminary to creeping, creeping and walking, a preliminary talking period from the seventeenth to twenty-fourth month, and rapid development of speech in the third year, with questioning, drawing and collecting interests in the fourth to sixth years. The article states "The following explanation of the periods into which the charts are divided should be here noted." The periods are marked on the charts with dotted vertical lines and slightly different age boundaries for the two children.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Longitudinal individual records taken at regular intervals from birth, with chart divisions anchored to observed motor and mental developments

Constraints

  • Period boundaries differ between the two children (e.g., movements preliminary to creeping at 6th to 10th month for the first child, 6th to 8th month for the second)

Target Learners

  • infants and young children from birth to six years

Learning Goals

  • relating motor and speech development periods to physical growth patterns
