Description

An online educational robotics course designed and implemented for inservice teachers who had little or no prior experience in teaching robotics, applying instructional design factors and teaching and facilitation strategies derived from the learning by design (LBD) framework. The course included a robotics open-ended project completed by participating teachers. The authors conclude that the study sheds light on "the design components of a robotics course grounded in LBD that are effective for preparing teachers in an online environment to implement robotics in their classrooms."

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Inservice teacher participants; instructional design factors and teaching and facilitation strategies derived from the LBD framework; an open-ended robotics project.

Constraints

  • Implemented online in a synchronized environment during fall 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic; teachers recognized constraints of learning educational robotics online.

Target Learners

  • inservice K-12 teachers with little or no robotics teaching experience

Learning Goals

  • robotics content knowledge
  • robotics teaching confidence and self-efficacy
  • problem-solving and collaboration strategies
