Description

The intervention consisted of two activity types: geometry activities (sorting shapes, attributes of shapes, classification of polygons) and a pedagogical activity analyzing elementary students' geometry work. Participants completed a worksheet of open-ended definition questions and 10 quadrilateral figures, then analyzed six selected student worksheets in pairs and small groups using a protocol, discussing what the student knew, misconceptions, and how to teach the concepts. The combination of activities "provided coherence" across individual, pair, and whole-class formats.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Student work used for professional development should be challenging in terms of students' errors, per Kazemi and Franke

Constraints

  • Preservice teachers only experienced the materials as students without teaching them, which the authors flag as possibly limiting effectiveness

Target Learners

  • elementary school preservice teachers

Learning Goals

  • specialized content knowledge of geometry and analysis of student mathematical thinking
