Description

The learning persona is a theoretical construct derived from user-centred design principles representing what students should ideally understand after the annotation task. It rests on three assumptions: students start with a traditional mindset treating disagreement as error, disagreement reflects domain complexity, and students must recognise their own role in constructing biased datasets. The trajectory operationalises five concepts — annotation ambiguity, data quality, bias and fairness, implementation barriers, and pedagogical effectiveness — mapping students from "Single ground truth" to "Multiple valid labels". The authors use it as an analytical guide, not a grading rubric.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Used as an analytical perspective against which to evaluate quantitative survey data and qualitative feedback, not as a grading rubric

Constraints

  • The article states the learning persona is a theoretical ideal serving as an analytical guide rather than a grading rubric

Target Learners

  • Bachelor data science and machine learning students

Learning Goals

  • Understanding subjectivity of data annotation
  • Understanding how human judgement shapes AI model behaviour
  • Understanding bias and fairness in AI
