Description¶
An integrated proposal for teaching fractions and decimals in elementary school from the 1st to the 5th grade, used as the common curriculum for both study groups. Its main innovations are that fraction teaching precedes decimal teaching (fractions in 3rd grade, decimals in 4th), emphasis on "understanding of the concept of fraction and the procedures" before rules and written algorithms, support for developmental progressions based on a Learning Trajectories Approach, use of everyday contexts, problem solving, storytelling and educational technologies, many fraction models for visualization, and emphasis on mental calculation and estimation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- teaching materials (student book, workbook, teacher's book) developed in accordance with the curriculum's principles and objectives
Constraints¶
- in this study only the trajectory part addressed to 3rd grade students was used
Target Learners¶
- elementary school students, grades 1-5
Learning Goals¶
- conceptual understanding of fractions and decimals
- number sense
- problem-solving skills
Claims¶
- Storytelling-based introduction of fraction concepts produced significantly higher post-test achievement than manipulative-based introduction in third graders [+M]
- Storytelling improved comparing fractions, equivalent fractions, creating and manipulating representations, and problem solving, but not part-whole interpretation or number-line use [+M]
- Learning is effective when it builds on children's existing knowledge in real-world contexts, and early fraction foundations matter because many older children struggle with rational numbers [+W]
