Description¶
The training pattern comprises three daily sessions of a lexical decision task — 1600 five-letter stimuli per week, including 800 SUBTLEX-DE words, 400 pseudowords, and 400 consonant strings — with immediate feedback (green/red squares after each response), preceded and followed by a standardized SLS reading speed assessment. Only the pre-test and first session data are used for outcome prediction. This task structure trains lexical categorization while monitoring general reading speed change at the sentence level.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Stimuli drawn randomly from a lexicon to represent natural variation in word characteristics, increasing feature generalizability.
- A standardized sentence-level reading speed test (adult SLS) for pre-post diagnostics.
- In control comparisons, at least 14 days between the two randomized training weeks.
Constraints¶
- The post-test placement differed across experiments (day 3 in Experiment 1, day 4 in Experiments 2 and 3), which the authors handled with a design-change variable in the predictive model.
Target Learners¶
- adult non-native German language learners
Learning Goals¶
- lexical categorization skill
- reading speed
