Description¶
Four providers each sent evidence-based literacy materials passively to their 2,500 allocated schools: CEM sent "the evidence-based booklet, Improving Reading: A Guide for Teachers"; IEE sent print issues of Better Evidence-based Education, the fortnightly 'Best Evidence in Brief' email, and access to the Evidence 4 Impact database; ResearchEd/NatCen sent an invitation to view an archived webinar and conference materials; and the Campaign for Learning gave schools a free Teaching How2s subscription with step-by-step visual guides. Materials were sent between spring 2015 and July 2016 with no active support.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Providers only needed to confirm they had sent their materials as planned to headteacher contacts; no active engagement or consent from schools was required
Constraints¶
- The trial did not monitor whether schools engaged with or used the materials; attendance at the ResearchEd conference was not part of this trial
Target Learners¶
- Key Stage 2 pupils in English primary schools
Learning Goals¶
- Key Stage 2 literacy attainment
