Description¶
A 4-week reading strategy training in which "Mental simulation was taught in a 4-week training program containing eight 30-min lessons (two lessons per week)", alternating group instruction lessons with individual computer-based lessons. The lessons used "a balanced approach of direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, and individual practice", covered multisensory, visual, and motor simulation, and replaced the school's regular reading comprehension lessons during the training period.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Trained research assistants following standardized instructions delivered the lessons, with each computer-based lesson preceded by an instruction lesson
Constraints¶
- The eight lessons replaced the school's regular reading comprehension lessons for the 4-week training period
Target Learners¶
- third and fourth graders in regular primary schools
Learning Goals¶
- connecting sensorimotor experiences to text to build an embodied situation model and improve reading comprehension
Claims¶
- Mental Simulation Training Improves Grade3 Reading Comprehension [+M]
- Mental Simulation Training Raises Reading Motivation [+M]
