Description¶
Workbook C of the language unit presents a cueing strategy for developing pupils' independent language use. The document states "it is important that the teacher follow a cueing strategy which moves gradually from a pattern of models and closed cues, to one of open cues." Closed cues (including language models and one-word-answer questions) restrict the language a pupil can use, while open cues place no restriction and call for independent, creative language use. The strategy is depicted as an arrow diagram running from dependence to independence, first introducing new language with models and closed cues, then moving to open cues so pupils use the new language to talk about their own experiences.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The teacher must first use models and closed cues to introduce new language before moving to open cues
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- teachers of preschool and K-3 children
Target Goals¶
- oral language development
- independent language use
Claims¶
- A 1970 teacher self-analysis programme asserts, without data, that teacher responses including verbal rewards can close off pupil thinking [~W] — an assertion from the same 1970 teacher self-analysis programme, without data
Patterns Used¶
- Scaffolding and Fading: cues fade from language models and closed, one-word-answer cues to open cues that call for independent language use
