Description

A learning approach that motivates students to learn mathematical proving actively: students 'were motivated to think independently , start with a simple problem for improving a solution accompanied with its supporting reason and to communicate their ideas writtenly or orally'. Written communication occurs on a board or in article form; oral communication involves presenting and defending work in front of class with little lecturer guidance. The article implemented it in an advanced abstract algebra course to train self-regulated problem solving, composing relevant reasons, and convincing peers.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Implementation to no more than 24 students, or grouping students of varied prior mathematics ability when there are more
  • Students compose proofs themselves rather than copying lecturer's proofs passively
  • Adequate time, namely one semester, for advanced courses

Constraints

  • In this study it was conducted during a half semester, which the authors say was too short for advanced proving tasks
  • Low prior-ability students needed revised materials with more explanation and exercises

Target Learners

  • undergraduate mathematics students in advanced abstract algebra

Learning Goals

  • mathematical understanding ability
  • mathematical proving ability
  • active learning habits and positive learning disposition
