Description

A Moodle course implementing a technology-enhanced workbook that "replaced paper-based worksheets and notebooks" in an inquiry-based energy unit. It featured task formats from multiple-choice to open-ended answers, recorded student artifacts across 36 tasks, and gave each student a personal laptop or tablet. The recorded artifacts supplied the cognitive data stream (107 scores per student via evidence-centered design scoring), while self-report instruments after each of five unit parts supplied affective and metacognitive data.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Each student needs access to a laptop or tablet; teachers participate in professional learning on project-based pedagogy and the workbook

Constraints

  • Data collection is limited by classroom affordances such as missed lessons and teacher instructions to skip tasks, which produced missing task responses

Target Learners

  • middle school students in grades 7 and 8 in Gymnasium and Gemeinschaftsschule school types

Learning Goals

  • energy concept understanding
  • scientific practices such as planning investigations and constructing explanations
