Description¶
The article concludes that in designing surgical training, team building and safety procedures, "MP has potential to improve performance and its application is highly economical, sustainable and feasible with current resources", offering an alternative to expensive technology-based simulation. It further proposes that teams can share their practical envisioning derived through MP to improve collective performance, positioning MP as an information-sharing practice proximal to the task and related to shared mental models, anticipatory thinking and situational awareness. Unlike reflective practice's retrospective review, MP privileges cultivating foresight.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Organisational support for MP resources, requiring organisational spaces, leadership and interpersonal expertise, for example instantiation in pre-surgical routines
Constraints¶
- The article states MP is still under theorised and little acknowledged, and that whether and how users apply MP post training remains largely unreported
Target Learners¶
- surgical trainees and practising surgeons
- surgical teams
Learning Goals¶
- surgical performance improvement
- team coordination and safety
