Description

The MTIS treatment was incorporated into the teaching methods course at the University of Florida and, beyond the course's normal requirements, "added the following three elements: (a) a lecture on the seven components of a math-enhanced lesson , (b) random assignment of the NCTM sub -standards among the preservice teachers, and (c) requiring two of the micro-teaching lessons to be math-enhanced." Treatment-group teachers delivered math-enhanced lessons to peers using the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education's seven components, observing up to 12 peer math-enhanced lessons while roleplaying as secondary students.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Requires the teaching methods course structure of lectures and peer micro-teachings, NCTM sub-standards cross-referenced to National Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Cluster Content Standards, and the seven components of a math-enhanced lesson model.

Constraints

  • The article reports the treatment did not significantly change any of the three measured efficacy constructs, and the experimental group generally had slightly lower self-efficacy scores after the treatment.

Target Learners

  • preservice agricultural education teachers in their final year of a teacher education program

Learning Goals

  • teaching contextualized mathematics within agricultural education curricula
