Description¶
The mathematics teaching and integration strategies (MTIS) treatment was incorporated into the lab sections of an agricultural teaching methods course. Beyond the normal course requirements, "the treatment added the following three elements: (a) a lecture on the seven components of a math -enhanced lesson, (b) random assignment of the NCTM sub -standards among the preservice teachers, and (c) requiring two of the micro-teaching lessons to be math-enhanced". Treatment-group members taught two NCTM sub-standards to peers and observed peers teaching up to 12 math-enhanced lessons while role-playing as secondary students.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The treatment was delivered within the existing teaching methods course structure of lectures and labs with eight normally required micro-teachings
- The lecture on the seven components was reviewed by an expert to ensure validity
Constraints¶
- Random assignment of subjects was not possible; the MTIS treatment was randomly assigned to two of three self-registered course sections
Target Learners¶
- senior preservice agricultural education teachers
Learning Goals¶
- mathematics ability
- teaching contextualized mathematics in agriculture
