Description¶
The intervention was a series of 14 classroom lessons integrating mathematics content with music activities, delivered weekly at "one or two 45-minute music-mathematics integrated lessons". Students used graphic notation (music color cards) and instruments such as handbells, drums, music sticks, and keyboards as physical manipulatives, and mathematics problems were individualized based on students' own music compositions and instrument designs. The lessons were developed from An and Capraro's (2011) textbook and piloted over two semesters before the study.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher professional development in music-mathematics integrated instruction prior to implementation
Constraints¶
- The control group received standard mathematics lessons only; the intervention was tested in a single school with two classes
Target Learners¶
- third-grade elementary students
Learning Goals¶
- number operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and mathematical reasoning
