Description¶
A recorded musical mnemonic treatment in which a list of 14 unrelated vocabulary words from the coursebook Hey There 3A was harmonized to the familiar melody of "Let It Go" by Indina Menzel and recorded in a professional studio under skilled musicians' supervision. Word validity was checked by an expert panel of English teachers and musicians using Lawsh CVR (threshold above 0.42) and Waltz and Bausell CVI (acceptable index 0.79). The non-musical control heard the same words spoken at one word per second.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Words must be validated by an expert panel using Lawsh CVR and CVI before inclusion
- The melody must be familiar to learners, since familiar melody "provides a link between melody and text"
- Recording requires musicians familiar with correct English pronunciation of the words
Constraints¶
- The intervention was tested only with intermediate-level teenage EFL learners in an Iranian language institute using words from Hey There 3A
Target Learners¶
- teenage EFL learners (aged 14-19) at intermediate level
Learning Goals¶
- vocabulary remembering and recall
- vocabulary comprehension of new words in new contexts
Claims¶
- Musical Mnemonic Improves Word Recall Efl [+M]
- Musical Mnemonic Improves Vocabulary Comprehension [+M]
