Description¶
The authors developed a sensitivity framework for assessing transfer on an end-of-Grade-2 science reading comprehension measure, building on the content and context dimensions of transfer. Passages differed in exposure to taught vocabulary: "the content of the near-, mid-, and far-transfer passages provided extensive, limited, and no exposure, respectively, to the domain-specific vocabulary networks that children learned in the lessons." The context dimension captured similarity to the taught thematic lessons, with near-transfer contexts similar to instruction and mid and far contexts less similar.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Passages must vary systematically in exposure to directly taught vocabulary networks
- Comprehension items must be aligned to the content and context dimensions of transfer
Constraints¶
- The framework was developed for a Grade 2 science content reading comprehension outcome in this study
Target Learners¶
- Second-grade students reading science informational texts
Learning Goals¶
- Transfer of domain and topic knowledge to novel reading comprehension tasks
