Description¶
The report argues that instructional time policy must build in realistic room for the human and operational demands of elementary classrooms rather than a maximally compressed schedule. Its observations showed schools operating "a highly compressed schedule" in which non-instructional demands spill into officially allotted instruction time. It concludes that a 300-minutes-a-day instructional program must be nested within a school day of 360-400 minutes, depending on lunch organization and whether recess is restored.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- School day length must be extended beyond the current 330-minute closed campus schedule to absorb operational demands without eroding instruction.
Constraints¶
- The report notes Chicago's largely disadvantaged schools are asked to make achievement gains in less time than more advantaged surrounding systems; new charter schools chose 60-90 minutes longer days.
Target Learners¶
- Chicago Public Schools elementary students
Learning Goals¶
- Increasing delivered instructional time across the full academic program
