National Growth Mindset Intervention (NGMI) probability sampling plan

Description

The NGMI study evaluates a brief online growth mindset intervention—two 25-minute sessions communicating that intelligence is malleable—delivered to 9th grade students. The sampling plan targets all 9th grade students in the 9,190 'regular' U.S. public high schools, with a national probability sample of 80 schools. Strata were created from school achievement (a latent variable based on GreatSchools.org and College Board data) and school minority composition, yielding five strata with a multipurpose allocation reported in Table 1.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Exclusion criteria as printed: only schools serving grades 9–12, excluding charter and magnet schools, schools serving special populations, and schools with fewer than 25 9th grade students

Constraints

  • Outcomes are administrative records from the beginning of 10th grade (grades, test scores when available, course-taking measures), collected after the two online sessions

Target Learners

  • 9th grade students in U.S. regular public high schools

Learning Goals

  • academic outcomes including grades, test scores, and math course taking

Claims

  • Multipurpose Design Three Generalization Questions [+M]
  • Strata Dealias Correlated Moderators [+M]
