Novel linkage of the National Neonatal Research Database and National Pupil Database

Description

The study created what the authors describe as "a novel linkage between the NNRD and the NPD" — the first, to their knowledge, "to combine these national resources." The National Neonatal Research Database contains data on all UK neonatal admissions from 2007 onward, while the National Pupil Database is an administrative dataset of educational outcomes for all state-funded pupils in England maintained by the Department for Education. This linkage enabled integration of maternal and neonatal clinical data with statutory educational outcomes at school entry for population-level surveillance.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Sufficient personal identifiers (NHS numbers) for record linkage; 27.7% of eligible children could not be linked due to missing or incomplete NHS numbers

Constraints

  • The NPD does not capture children outside the state-funded education system, so home-schooled, privately schooled, or migrated children could not be characterized

Target Learners

  • Children born very preterm in England

Learning Goals

  • Population-level monitoring of educational outcomes after preterm birth
