Description

The evaluation combined a multi-site cluster randomized trial (CRT) and an implementation study across 49 elementary schools (kindergarten through 5th grade) in 7 districts, with approximately 4,500 students and 1,200 teachers per year. Schools were "randomly assigned to treatment (N=25) and comparison (N=24)" blocking at the district level, with districts recruited over a 3-year timeframe. Year 1 focused on kindergarten and third grade cohorts; Year 2 on first and fourth grade cohorts, assessing approximately 50 students per school per cohort in fall and spring. Outcomes were measured with the GRADE and Student Motivation Form, and fidelity was captured through observations, interviews, and surveys.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • District-level blocking in randomization and fall/spring pre-post assessment windows using the GRADE and Student Motivation Form

Constraints

  • Each year of data was collected as cross-sectional and each year was analyzed independently

Target Learners

  • elementary school students in kindergarten through 5th grade

Learning Goals

  • reading achievement and reading proficiency
