Description¶
PA-driven instruction is teaching that ensures learners apply relevant previous knowledge and abilities to solve open-ended mathematics problems with the teacher as a facilitator, so that students demonstrate proficiency in solving mathematical problems. It builds on Nitko's definition of performance assessment as requiring students to apply knowledge and skills from several areas to complete a task, combining formative and summative assessment. In this study it was operationalised as six weeks of lessons using performance assessment test items, contrasted with traditional instruction in which students memorise presented facts or apply formulae without attention to why or when.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Performance assessment tasks consisting of a hands-on task and clearly defined criteria to evaluate how well the student achieved the application specified by the learning target
- Teachers able to facilitate open-ended problem solving rather than transmit facts
Constraints¶
- In this study the performance assessment tasks were not extended projects; each test lasted two hours
Target Learners¶
- senior high school Form 1 science students in Ghana
Learning Goals¶
- mathematics achievement
- problem-solving ability
- positive attitude to mathematics
