Description

The article recommends that statistics teaching replace textbook-based instruction with project-based learning in which students select their own variables, craft research questions, and collect and analyze their own data in small heterogeneous groups, presenting results to peers. The quasi-experiment supports this: "the project based learning increased students' attitude towards statistics in the intervention group", while the control group showed no significant change.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Projects drawn from real-life, familiar contexts with statistical content
  • About one month for students to prepare projects
  • Heterogeneous groups of about three students with end-of-term presentations

Constraints

  • Evidence comes from one quasi-experimental study with two 8th-grade classes in a single urban middle school in Trabzon; students were not randomly assigned

Target Learners

  • 8th grade middle-school mathematics students

Learning Goals

  • Positive attitudes towards statistics, statistical literacy
