Description¶
The article describes a hybrid pedagogy that "combin[es] the structured clinical context of CBL with the inquiry-based, student-driven nature of PBL". In practice, students study pre-class materials, take a pre-class quiz, analyse a representative clinical case in small groups, present findings, and receive instructor feedback before a post-class quiz. The authors state this integration "appears to strike a balance between instructor facilitation and learner autonomy". It is grounded in adult learning theory and competency-based education.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires structured learning materials prepared by the instructor, including lecture videos, literature, and surgical demonstration videos
- Requires adequate instructor facilitation to maintain focus
Constraints¶
- PBL alone can be time-consuming and demanding for residents with intensive clinical schedules
- CBL alone may result in passive learning if discussion is excessively guided
Target Learners¶
- Gynecology residents in postgraduate medical education
Learning Goals¶
- Clinical reasoning
- Diagnostic reasoning
- Learning initiative and engagement
Claims¶
- Pbl Cbl Improves Case Analysis Scores Gynecology Residents [+M]
- Pbl Cbl Increases Interest Initiative Thinking [+M]
- Pbl Cbl Increases Resident Satisfaction [+M]
- Pbl Cbl No Difference Basic Knowledge Skills Scores [~M]
