Description

A lesson-level instructional pattern combining flipped pre-class preparation with problem-based small-group inquiry. One week before class, teams receive texts, PPT slides, e-books, videos and online platform resources and investigate topics "aligned with current social issues in China" such as fireworks-related ocular injuries. In the two 40-min sessions each team delivers a 10-min presentation, a 5-min Q&A follows, and the instructor facilitates a 20-min whole-class discussion integrating clinical knowledge with value-based reflection.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Same textbook, teaching content, instructor and total teaching hours across comparison groups; centralized lesson preparation and a detailed teaching protocol observed for fidelity
  • Students organized into small teams with assigned group leaders before class

Constraints

  • Implemented in the relatively straightforward, socially linked Ocular Trauma module; generalizability to more abstract ophthalmology modules (e.g., glaucoma, retinal diseases) needs further validation per the authors

Target Learners

  • third-year undergraduate clinical medicine students in ophthalmology

Learning Goals

  • self-directed learning ability
  • empathy
  • theoretical ophthalmology knowledge (ocular trauma)
