Description¶
In its discussion, the article frames why PBL works via a process account: the problem-solving process "was guided by a framework where students learn to explore and analyse problems systematically (Dochy et al., 2005)", making students proactive and expanding existing knowledge bases. Students use varied information sources including informal peer discussion, integrating knowledge across disciplines, and PBL "provides channels for students to experience authentic problems (Savery & Duffy, 1995)", increasing involvement and innovative, creative solution approaches. In contrast, non-PBL lecture-based learning leaves students passive, memorizing and relying on notes.
