Description

The article characterizes problem-based learning (PBL) as "an educational approach usually characterized by the use of real problems as a context for students to acquire knowledge and develop skills". Unlike the traditional teaching model, "PBL approach is student-centered": students learn a subject "through the experience of problem solving in a tutor-led small group". In this meta-analysis PBL is the experimental intervention, compared against traditional teaching in Chinese physical diagnostics courses, with knowledge and skill scores as outcomes.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Real problems used as the context for acquiring knowledge and developing skills
  • A tutor-led small group in which students learn through problem solving

Constraints

  • The article notes evidence that the PBL teaching model is not superior to the traditional approach with respect to the acquisition of factual knowledge, and that effects may differ across subjects

Target Learners

  • Medical students in Chinese medical schools studying physical diagnostics (clinical diagnostics)

Learning Goals

  • Acquiring basic clinical knowledge and theoretical knowledge of physical diagnostics
  • Developing clinical skills: history taking, physical examination, and diagnostic reasoning
