Description¶
The PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle, "also known as the 'quality loop', is a management approach for continuous improvement". In this article it organizes ETI training for standardised training residents: Plan sets goals and key indicators, Do implements tiered training, SOPs and quality control, Check monitors real-time procedural compliance and feeds back data weekly, and Act implements targeted optimisations such as mandatory airway assessment. Root-cause analysis via a fishbone diagram identified factors in four aspects: "man, material, method and environment".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A PDCA team conducting root cause analysis and demonstration of possible influencing factors
- Real-time monitoring documentation and weekly data feedback meetings
Constraints¶
- Applied in a single emergency department with standardised training residents; the authors note it is a single-center retrospective study subject to temporal confounding
Target Learners¶
- standardised training residents rotating through the emergency department
Learning Goals¶
- endotracheal intubation technique
- difficult airway identification and management
- complication prevention
Claims¶
- Pdca Increases Etl First Pass Success Str [+M]
- Pdca Improves Difficult Airway Identification [+M]
- Pdca Reduces Key Etl Complications [+M]
- Multiple attempts rate decreased significantly after PDCA implementation while overall ETI success rate did not differ significantly [+W]
