Description

The article introduces pedagogical friction as a first-class architectural primitive: revision suggestions are gated behind an intelligent reflection gate that assesses the student's written defense for substance and, if thin, coaches rather than answers. The two-phase API design (/challenge → /unlock) ensures that "genuine cognitive effort—not merely a keystroke—precedes the delivery of revision support." The gate uses a deterministic assessment layer (length floor, reasoning markers, topical relevance) followed by a model-side status check, and after two coached attempts a genuine effort is released to a scaffolded hint.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A written student defense must be captured and assessed before any revision suggestion is released
  • A deterministic assessment layer checking length, reasoning markers, and question-specific relevance

Constraints

  • The architecture supports only up to two coaching turns per question, not open-ended multi-turn dialogue
  • If an unlocked suggestion is misaligned, there is no mechanism for iteratively refining the defense–suggestion exchange

Target Learners

  • K–12 students developing argumentative writing skills
  • students preparing for standardized assessments such as AP English Language and GRE Analytical Writing

Learning Goals

  • argumentative writing quality
  • metacognitive reflection and self-explanation
