Description

A sleep-based intervention in which auditory cues for 104 semantically related word pairs are replayed during stable NREM 2/NREM 3 sleep, with the number of presentations (PRES) adjusted by learners' prospective difficulty ratings and pre-sleep recall accuracy: "1 PRES for correct responses at L2, 2 PRES for incorrect responses at L2, and 4 PRES for any response at L3"; no cues were delivered for L1 items. Unlike fixed TMR, cue frequency tracks individual memory trace strength and task difficulty. Prospective three-level difficulty self-ratings (L1–L3) taken after each retrieval trial drive the schedule.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A sleep expert monitoring EEG in real-time to deliver cues during stable NREM 2 or NREM 3 for at least 10 consecutive 30-s epochs
  • Prospective difficulty self-ratings and pre-sleep retrieval accuracy for each word pair
  • Cue-to-cue spacing of approximately 5 s exceeding the spindle refractory period

Constraints

  • Manual administration of auditory stimuli by sleep experts poses challenges for real-world applications
  • The small sample per group may limit generalizability of the findings

Target Learners

  • Healthy young adults learning semantically related word pairs (mean age 26.57)

Learning Goals

  • Long-term retention and error correction of paired-associate verbal memories over a 12-hour sleep interval
