Description

The intervention was an adaptation of the PHAST Reading Program delivered in small instructional groups of 5-8 students; "These groups received 70 hours of intervention (typically 45ŌĆō60 minutes daily) during the school year, as an add-on to their regular language arts and reading curriculum". "The PHAST intervention was designed to remediate decoding deficits and teach effective word identification strategies", combining direct instruction of letter-sound correspondences, phonological analysis and blending, four word-identification strategies, repeated varied practice, and later comprehension strategy work. Approximately 75%-80% of activities were devoted to decoding and word identification.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Experienced research teachers with a detailed scripted Scope and Sequence, weekly monitoring by a senior research teacher, monthly fidelity observations, and daily lesson diaries

Constraints

  • Formal comprehension instruction was added only for lessons 44-70, with only 5-10 minutes per lesson allotted to comprehension activities

Target Learners

  • Children with reading disabilities in grades 3-4 in urban public and charter schools

Learning Goals

  • Decoding and word identification
  • Transfer of strategies to uninstructed texts
  • Reading comprehension
