Description

The point person is an OUSD staff member—typically a classroom teacher, occasionally a counselor or other school employee—embedded in every dual enrollment classroom alongside the Peralta instructor. The role is defined by six functions: the point person "is present during college instruction alongside the Peralta instructor," holds the classroom on off days, monitors progress through the college's learning management system, coordinates interventions, bridges communication between instructor, students, staff, and families, and manages logistics. The model evolved organically over 11 years of problem-solving rather than from research or policy mandates, and was then systematized.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Point people must know the students, understand high school culture, and can convey differences between college expectations and adolescent learners' realities

Constraints

  • Funding arrangements vary by site with no single formula; the report notes floating-staff arrangements result in less relationship continuity

Target Learners

  • High school students in dual enrollment courses, predominantly first-generation students, students from low-income backgrounds, and students of color

Learning Goals

  • College course success and pass rates in dual enrollment coursework
