Description¶
The paper defines powerful learning as "a set of principles that guide educators to design learning experiences that meaningfully engage students": "personal and accessible, authentic and challenging, collaborative and connected, and inquisitive and reflective." The HP Learning Studio is presented as exemplifying these: it is centrally located and not tied to one class, supports authentic community-serving projects, enables collaborative creation of shareable learning artifacts, and fosters a safe space to fail and iterate. The authors cite research that authentic, project-based STEM environments feel more motivating and psychologically safe.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A centrally located, shared space not tied to any one teacher's class or club, so access is open to all students and educators
Constraints¶

Target Learners¶
- high school students, particularly historically and systemically excluded youth
Learning Goals¶
- meaningful engagement, passion and interest discovery, preparation for future careers
