Description

The article proposes replacing test-oriented summative assessment with a process-oriented assessment model that draws on artifacts the flipped model already generates. It lists as assessment components "The on-line study checklists before class, the translation logs, the peer review forms, the translated versions, the teacher's observation of the translator groups' discussion and performance and the feedbacks and comments from the client group". The teacher takes a new identity as observer of the translation process, and the model is presented as the assessment component of an integrated flipped classroom pedagogy in which learning, teaching and assessment mutually reinforce each other.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The project-based flipped learning activities (checklists, logs, peer review forms, translated versions, client feedback) that supply the assessment evidence

Constraints

  • The model is explicitly tentative: the article states it "is still in its tentative stage and leaves much to be improved and tested", with efficacy to be tested in follow-up research

Target Learners

  • third-year English-major university students in Business English Translation

Learning Goals

  • translation competence assessed across the translation process rather than by product alone
